Training material was produced for the training courses for port health officers and seafarers.

A total of 61 professional seafarers applied to participate in the course for seafarers from 10 cruise lines. A total of 58 trainees finally attended. The consistency of the group of trainees was diverse in terms of job posts hold.
A total of 54 port health officers applied to participate in the course for port health officers from 23 European and ascending and 9 EUROMED countries. A total of 50 trainees finally attended: 38 from 21 European and ascending countries and 12 trainees from 8 EUROMED countries.


Training materials included lectures, case studies and practical sessions, e-learning.

The training subjects include:
a. Communicable disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and management (notifiable diseases, case definitions, contact tracing in sea travel, other gastrointestinal disease, as ╬Łorovirus outbreaks etc.),
b. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Technique,
c. Food safety (food handling and preparation),
d. Drinking water management,
e. Pest control (rodents, insects etc),
f. Waste management,
g. Ballast water management,
h. Pool and spa operation maintenance,
i. Housekeeping and infection control,
j. Equipment and Facility Maintenance,
k. Legionnaires’ disease prevention,
l. Sanitation inspection guidelines, including the issuing of the ship sanitation certificates.

The training materials are presented in two interactive CD-ROMS, one for the port health officers and one for the seafarers and containing the following:

The e-learning platform

The e-learning platform is a tool that targets the crew members and port health officers and refers to the content of the European Ship Sanitation Manual.
The e-learning platform currently has several content sections:

  • The e-learning presentation and quizzes
  • An interactive version of the manual
  • A forum and chat function
  • A database of relevant documentation

E-learning modules for Seafarers

Users of the e-learning platform:
Trainees: 62
Trainers/Facilitators: 27

The e-learning consists of 9 modules of which 3 were optional. The duration of each module was 30 minutes.

The main modules are:
1st Module: Introduction to the SHIPSAN TRAINET
2nd Module: SHIPSAN TRAINET manual
3rd Module: Food safety
4th Module: Water safety
5th Module: Communicable diseases and medical facilities
6th Module: Housekeeping

The optional modules are given below:
8th Module: Basic communicable diseases
9th Module: Food microbiology
10th Module: Water microbiology
